Temples / Wats In And Near Near Udon Thani
Temples (or Wats) are the most holy of places for Thai Buddhists, and even some of the Chinese that live in the Udon Thani area. Some temples are more important than others from the Thai perspective on either religious or historical grounds but for me and many other ex-pats, we are more likely to prioritise the temples that have more than just places to pray and worship Buddha. Every village in Thailand will feature a minimum of one temple to serve it's local Buddhist population, so as you can imagine there are an awful lot of them. It is believed there are more than 40,000 temples in Thailand today although perhaps only 85% remain active.
I go looking for temples that have one or more unusual or outstanding feature, be it an especially large figure of Buddha, a good sized collection of different Buddha statues, great grounds or anything else out of the ordinary.
One of the biggest problems in such an undertaking is the lack of information about all of these temples. The internet has precious little information, other than this website, and even if I was to try and get 'inside' information from the monks about any historical aspect of a temple, I would probably not be able to get a response as English is not at all widely spoken here in the north east of Thailand.
If you want to get a basic understanding of the statues you will see in the temples, visit our Buddha Statue Meanings page.
