There is little point in glossing over the fact that the majority of foreign visitors to Udon Thani are single and male, and in all probability looking for sex or love (or at least a good friendship or companionship) with one of the many lovely Thai girls that work and live here. To that end, the nightlife covered on this site is exclusive to the naughty nightlife in Udon Thani, that is available to foreign visitors. Beyond this, the reality is that there is not much else in the way of Udon Thani nightlife that most foreigners would be interested in, unless you are on a mission to sample as much Thai food as possible in the numerous restaurants.
On the assumption that you have been to Bangkok and/or Pattaya to experience the incredible nightlife that thrives on the droves of foreign visitors, then the sex scene and Udon Thani nightlife will appear quite tame in comparison, but it appears that this actually works in favour of the city, as many visitors don't want the hustle and bustle of the big city and large, packed out bar areas. |
Other than it being a little quieter, everything is pretty much the same as anywhere else in Thailand, with just less of it available, but enough of it for the current demand. Should tourism continue to rise as it has done in recent years, then it is highly likely that more opportunities for the 'sex tourist' will arise almost overnight.
Sex in Udon Thani, for the visitor, is readily available although the places where it is a case of walking in and paying your money, is actually quite restricted, and as far as I can gather, has been developed specifically in such a way to keep it all in a single, small area of the city. Ferangland, where the bars and massage parlours that offer such services are presently confined to an area stretching little more than perhaps 500m, on just a few roads. What Nightlife is on offer in Udon Thani?
The nightlife, prostitution and sex scene in Udon Thani thrives pretty well, with plenty bars, massage parlours and freelance hookers. There are two main bar areas in Udon Thani where you can find bar girls looking for a foreigner to take them back to the hotel for the night, or longer. Both are laid-back and far more subdued than the big cities in the south, and that is because Udon Thani just does not see the same amount of visitor traffic passing through. The whole bar scene is relaxed, and the bar girls are not generally too pushy, but of course still want you to visit their bar, even if only to buy them a few drinks.
There was one go go bar in Udon Thani which ceased trading in 2015, and at least one gay bar for men though I believe this has closed just before the Wolverine did. However, the Wolverine has been replaced by The Phoenix, which I am told does have dancing girls on show but there is not a great deal of activity before 11pm. There are of course a number of freelance prostitutes which hang out in certain areas between the two main bar areas, which are only a 7 minute walk apart. One thing that you will see that is different is the more modest clothes that the girls wear, and you will not see them wondering around in bikini tops etc in Udon Thani. As part of the agreement to establish a 'naughty nightlife' area in the city included a dress code of sorts, where modesty was at the forefront as the locals do not really wish to see their city end up like the Beach Road in Pattaya for example.

How much do the Udon Thani bar girls charge?
Based on a few conversations with a number of the Udon Thani bar girls, the short time rate asked is typically around 1000 baht (which you can try and negotiate down but are not likely to succeed), with an overnight rate of 2000 baht or more, with bar fines in the region of 300 baht. Quite a number of the bar girls are prepared to take you to a toilet at the back of the bar for a BJ, or hand relief if you prefer. It does not appear to happen too often as most men are looking to take the girls away from the bar area, but it does happen and it is available.
Again, the girls will ask for a high fee of around 1000 baht, but you should be able to get this reduced to something near 300 for a HJ, and perhaps 500 baht for a BJ. In some cases, you may even be asked to pay the bar fine on top, which is a little cheeky. It's up to you if you think it is worth the effort. To my mind, there are better alternatives, especially if you are staying a long time in Udon Thani.

Prostitution is illegal in Udon Thani, as it is in the rest of Thailand. In essence you are not paying anyone for sex as such, but hiring their company. The girls that work at the bars and/or waitresses at many restaurants are there for your 'entertainment', but are happy to spend time with their customers and even accept a drink from them. Any payment you make to take away one of these girls is compensation to the establishment for taking away one of their entertainers/waitresses.
What you do after that is up to you and the girl, but any money you directly give the girl is considered to be a gratuity, not payment for sex, and a way of thanking them for spending time with you and hopefully making you happy.
