Attractions In Udon Thani - Udon Thani Museum
The Udon Thani Museum is temporarily closed for renovations, which seem to have been going on forever. A number of the exhibits have been moved to another location a little to the north at Mattayom Tessaban 6 School , just off Udon Dussadi Road, and next to the Udon Thani Planetarium (which I am told is nothing special so have not included it on this site).
There are just 2 rooms holding exhibits in this temporary museum home and I am advised that everything will return to the original building sometime in 2017. Geo-Co-ordinates - 17.425197, 102.790496 |
Although Udon Thani has only been in existence since the late 1900's, the region has a history dating as far back as Bronze Age, indeed the local village of Ban Chiang is widely accepted as the world’s first bronze civilization. Ban Chiang village also features the larger Ban Chiang Museum, with artefacts which date back nearly 7000 years.
Udon Thani has a few relics from this period but the main focus is the short history of the city. The building was formerly a school house, which was converted in to the cities first museum in 2004.
There are remains from some 1,800 years ago, which have been found in the form of paintings on cave walls and battlements buried around a stone pillar at the Phu Prabat Historical Park.
Wat Ku Kaeo, which dates back 1200 years, has contributed some ancient iron remains, and Mon brick stupas from 700 years ago hid silver lined Buddha images.

How to get to Udon Thani Museum
The Udon Thani museum is just to the south of Nong Prajak Park. If coming from Day and Night, turn right, then right again at the bottom of the road, then walk past Central Plaza. You will then come to a 5 way junction, where you take the 2nd exit on to Adunyadet Road, where you will pass the Wolverine Go Go Bar. Keep going until you reach the Fountain Roundabout. At the roundabout, take the 4th exit on to the Pho Si Road. Stay on this road, and as you pass the southern bank of Nong Prajak Park, you will see the museum on the right, a little way before you get to Wat Phothisomphon
