Attractions Near Udon Thani - Ban Huay Dua Market
As far as attractions in Udon Thani go Ban Huay Dua Market is something completely different. Obviously, it was not built to serve the purpose of being an attraction for visitors but to feed the locals. But us curious foreigner visitors can not help ourselves when it comes to searching for unusual sights when in Thailand, especially in the more rural areas.
The market is quite large but you will find lots of traders selling the same foods which are mostly fruits and vegetables. However, for the curious there is some very interesting "wildlife", both dead and alive on view.
As far as I can make out everything for sale here is harvested locally, with a lot of the wildlife coming from the nearby forests. While the fruits and vegetables are widespread in Thailand, it is the "meat" that is just a little "special" and more localised.

For me, one of the most interesting creatures on display was the Coconut Worms, the larvae of the Coconut Beetle. These are alive and very active but for me, not very appealing. I would, perhaps use them for a fishing trip though. I am sure the local freshwater fish would gorge on the them, given the chance.
Other mind-boggling delicacies include a variety of frogs, Lamprey, Ant Eggs, Cockroaches, Crickets, Grasshoppers, Eels, Rats, Beetles, and more.
