Udon Thani Trains

Udon Thani is on the mainline running from Bangkok to Nong Khai and Vientiane in Laos. At the present time, to cross the border in to Laos, you must disembark at Nong Khai and obtain a visa at the Laos side of the Friendship Bridge. There is a somewhat limited service to Udon Thani from Bangkok, with most trains operating overnight.

Thai trains are rarely punctual. They usually leave on time from the city or origin and are almost always delayed en-route to their final destination. However, train travel in Thailand is the less expensive than using the bus and probably more comfortable. For sleeper cabins for overnight train journeys, it is strongly advised to book in advance. It is not necessary to book in advance for third class tickets but thius is not recommended for long journeys.
