Phu Thok Chiang Khan
Just a short distance from the Sky Walk at Chiang Khan is Phu Thok, one of the highest peaks in the Loei District of Issan. It is a drive of some 3 hours but as it is best visited at day-break, you may want to consider an overnight stay in nearby Chiang Khan and visiting the Chiang Khan Sky Walk which is about 20 km west of the town.
You do not need to worry about a long hike up a steep gradient as there is a shuttle service with converted pick-up trucks back and forth every 5 minutes or so. While you can get some excellent views during the day, the sun rising over the hills presents an opportunity for some really good photographs. We arrived at Phu Thok at 5:45 am and we were not alone. There were lots of people already present and during our 20 minute stay on the peak there must have been between 100 - 130 others - it made me wonder how busy it gets later in the day.
Is it worth travelling to just to visit this one location? Probably not unless you are a photographic enthusiast but it does make for a lovely place to visit if you are in the area.
